Inlays and Onlays

If you have a broken cusp on your tooth, or a larger cavity to fill, an inlay or onlay may be the best solution. Made from porcelain, these restorations are simple and effective, and can be an excellent alternative to a porcelain crown.

An inlay is used similarly to a traditional filling, but looks much more genuine and is more durable. Often, inlays may replace traditional fillings that have failed or fallen out. An onlay is necessary for a significant reconstruction, where it extends out over one or more cusps of the tooth.

An inlay or onlay may be best for you, in the following situations:

  • You have damage or decay on the cusp of your tooth
  • Your traditional filling has failed or has fallen out
  • You would like to replace large amalgam (silver) fillings for a stronger, more esthetic solution
  • You need significant reconstruction, but not enough for a porcelain crown

Dr. Keith Metzger and Dr. Kyle Metzger can deliver your inlay or onlay in one visit to our office, using the CEREC system. CEREC is one of the most exciting technological breakthroughs in modern dentistry. It is a CAD/CAM computer system which allows us to generate superb quality porcelain restorations in a single visit.

Our patients love this convenience, and we believe it offers these advantages:

  • Single appointment restoration
  • No messy impressions or temporary filling
  • Natural tooth colored porcelain
  • Precise computer generated fit allows preservation of tooth structure.

What to Expect

Your same-day inlay or onlay will be made for you while your wait at our office. These are the typical steps for your appointment:

  •  Dr. Metzger will prepare the tooth conservatively to create room for the inlay or onlay
  • We will capture a digital image of the area with an intraoral scanner
  • From the digital image, the CEREC system will create a 3D model of your teeth and the new restoration
  • The restoration is then milled (created) with a milling unit in our office lab
  • We will place your custom-fit inlay or onlay, and test for proper fit, bit, and dental correctness
  • You will go home without a temporary filling, and without a follow-up appointment to get your restoration.
