Porcelain Crowns
If your tooth has been structurally damaged by decay or trauma, it can be “capped” by a porcelain crown so that it functions properly and looks appealing. Porcelain crowns are durable and custom-made to fit over the entire tooth. And, in most cases, your crown can be made the same day!
Perhaps you bit into a piece of hard candy, or a popcorn kernel, and your tooth has not been the same. Maybe you have a large filling from previous decay, or maybe you have a tooth that had a root canal. These are all excellent reasons to consider a porcelain crown to repair you tooth. Porcelain crowns are also useful for making cosmetic changes to the color or shape of your teeth, when veneers may not be the right option.
You might remember the “old days” when your dentist told you that you needed a crown. That used to mean that you would have one appointment to prepare your tooth for the crown, and you would wear a temporary crown until the lab fabricated your crown. Then, 2-3 weeks later, you would go back to the dentist to get your new crown. These days are now history.
Dr. Keith Metzger and Dr. Kyle Metzger can deliver most porcelain crowns in one visit to our office, using the CEREC system. CEREC is one of the most exciting technological breakthroughs in modern dentistry. CEREC is a CAD/CAM computer system which allows us to generate superb quality porcelain restorations in a single visit. Our patients love this convenience, and we believe it offers these advantages to our patients:
- Single appointment restoration
- No messy impressions or temporary crown
- Natural tooth colored porcelain
- Precise computer generated fit allows preservation of tooth structure.

What to Expect
Your same-day crown will be made for you while your wait at our office. These are the typical steps for your appointment:
- Dr. Metzger will prepare the tooth conservatively to create room for the crown
- We will capture a digital image of the area with an intraoral scanner
- From the digital image, the CEREC system will create a 3D model of your teeth and the new restoration
- The restoration is then milled (created) with a milling unit in our office lab
- We will place your custom-fit crown, and test for proper fit, bit, and dental correctness
- You will go home without a temporary crown, and without a follow-up appointment to get your crown!
